I received my architectural training at UCLA, which has profoundly influenced my artistic practice. My work spans various media, from multi-media collages to my recent project, a social justice docuvideo told through a series of dioramas. These specialized "theaters" use metaphors, symbols, and contextual elements to offer a visceral journey into the unflinching realities of Black and Brown communities.
My professional experience includes assisting with the design, color, and composition for the Five Points Walking Tour Project. This project was recognized with a prestigious historic preservation award for urban design from the Denver Historic Society. My artistic work has also been exhibited, including a show at the Wandering Art Gallery in Denver, where I explored the architectural theory of Deconstructivism by reducing the human form to its basic mathematical and geometrical shapes.
In my community, I observed a significant lack of diversity in children's book illustrations. This inspired me to explore watercolor as a medium for capturing the subtle nuances of skin tones and the varied textures of hair. Watercolor is a challenging medium to master; while the artist can guide it, the paint has a life of its own, creating a translucent quality that beautifully captures the glow of our diverse skin tones and the grace of our crowns.
My goal is to create illustrations where all children can see themselves represented. When children find the magic within themselves, they can transform the commonplace into something extraordinary, creating a world of unlimited possibilities.
